Darling Girl

I'm super excited about these makeups I got from Darling Girl. This isn't a review because much better people have written in depth about their brand before, but more of a love letter to them because of how awesome they are! They gave me free samples too.

So pretty and sparkly! Which doesn't come out much in the photos. But I highly recommend their brand for sparkly, awesome, unusual colours.
One of my fav stores in Melbourne, Fashiondacci, had a sale the other week and I came away with pins and jewelry. They're quite expensive usually so I was happy to get some stuff while I could afford it. I'm now aware the pin with the writing on it is probably upside down. Classic stupid Westerner?

Edit: It means provide/lend/offer. ?? haha

And lastly, my boyfriend's old band, who have sadly broken up now, released their first video yesterday. It took about two years to make, hence the time lapse, but it's awesome nonetheless. Check it oot.

Blogger is being hella stupid and not letting me embed the video, so here's the link. :(

Galentines Day

It may or may not have been a coincidence, but I dyed my eyebrows pink on valentines day! Romantic, right? My boyfriend Oscar didn't even buy me any bears. Devvoed.

Instead I went out for dumplings and dessert story with my beautiful friend Ashlee, who runs a makeup blog as well as a personal one. Way better than bears.

And some more

Just another lewk with the fundamental palette... I quite liked this one:

So I used Inception in the crease, Surge in the inner corner and Bedaub along the bottom. I also used my Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara in Flipside. I've read a lot of reviews about Inception and how it's not that pigmented and stuff, which is true, but I actually liked the purple glow kind of effect it gave.

Makeuppppp

So I guess over the Christmas sale period I've gone a little crazy with the makeup. I've never been the type of person who uses anything more than concealer and a kohl pencil, up until about a year ago, but you know. People change. Makeup blogs are a big part of that, if not the main part. I always thought of makeup as something boring, to highlight a person's "best features" and conceal their flaws etc. I'm still not interested in that part of it, although I do find it interesting how a technique like contouring can make someone look completely different. I'm interested in the more theatrical part of it, like how can a person make themselves as colourful as possible? and other THRILLING QUESTIONS. Anyway. Here's what I bought.

Illamasqua Fundamental Palette, Pure Pigment in Zeitgeist, and Illuminator in Glimmer. EcoTools eyeshadow and angled eyeliner brush. Revlon nailpolishes in Popular and Zealous. And Revlon Lip Butter in Gumdrop.

And this is what I did with it:

Yeah, I'm a complete amateur. But I'm having fun. The eyeshadow is really nice, I love the colours, but I think I'm going to need an eyeshadow primer. They're not bright enough because my skin is a bit darker. Also it's oily so they slide off after a while. I'm used to this happening with pretty much all eyeshadows though, so it's time to invest in a primer. As usual I bought a weird pastel lip colour, which goes against every rule for my skin tone, but whatever! idk.

I feel profesh now that I have brushes! Yay.

Makeup as Identity

To begin with, let me just say that I have watched the Miss Representation documentary, and I thought it was really good. Like, awesome. It should be shown in every school, everywhere. And although I knew most of what they were saying, I'm really really glad it's all there together in a resource that can easily be shown to people who don't know about sexism in the media, and it's all explained in simple language that everyone can understand. That is one of the most important things about feminism now, I think - because feminist theory can get very, very dry and dense. And no average person would be able to decipher it, if people who genuinely know a lot about it have trouble. So, hooray for that.

I also subscribe to the e-newsletter they send out every week/fortnight/something. And so far, so good - they are encouraging everyone to spread awareness, become aware of female role models and encourage them, and other awesome empowering stuff. They recently had a competition where people wrote in suggesting an action or campaign that they thought could benefit women/feminism. The action that won was from a school-age girl who suggested "Fresh-Faced Friday", in which anyone was encouraged to participate. It began with the idea that each Friday, women should go without makeup in order to lessen their addiction to wearing it, and to make them feel like they don't have to wear it. It has since grown into a "Take 5", where participants choose to lessen the amount of makeup they wear by taking five aspects away from it, for example; five products, five dollars, or five minutes.

While I can see where they're coming from, and there is an immense pressure on women to look a certain way based on society's ideals (duh, this is feminism 101) I feel the campaign is really making the issue look black and white, when it is very, VERY complicated.

When the idea is spread that it is the women themselves who need to change what they are doing - by wearing less makeup - I feel this is putting the pressure on entirely the wrong people. It is society who expects women to look a certain way. Therefore, the pressure should be put on society to change their expectations, rather than on the women who are the victims of expectation. Everyone should be taught not to judge women for lack of makeup or grooming. If this were some sort of event in a workplace, for instance, where the employees decided to all wear no makeup together in order to inform their bosses that they should not be required to wear makeup to do their jobs, then yes, this statement would make sense. But just asking random women to wear less makeup? What type of message does this send?

Sure, it should be encouraged that if you don't want to wear makeup, you don't have to. But nobody can possibly blame a woman for feeling like she needs to wear makeup, in a world that constantly tells her she needs to wear makeup.

Moreover, not everyone is the type of person who hates wearing makeup but feels obliged to due to social pressures. SOME people are like that. A lot more women feel that their makeup is self expression. Makeup can be fun, and empowering. Makeup is tied irrevocably to many women's identities. Makeup can be your armor (to quote Arabelle, one of my feminist heroes.) I mean, sure, there's pressure to wear makeup, but once you wear too much makeup, or the wrong type of makeup, there is another type of anger directed towards you, as any fan of black lipstick knows. In that situation, makeup can be a form of rebellion. And it is no one's place to make you feel like your particular form of rebellion is wrong and making women less empowered.

For anyone who has scarring or a visible disability, makeup can mean so much more than just 'looking pretty', and I feel like this campaign completely disregards that. I understand it's coming from a simple place, but I feel like the adults who run this campaign should maybe have taken more care to educate the high-schoolers who are being influenced by it. It is a very prevalent high school attitude to shame the girls who wear makeup and short skirts by exclaiming how "normal looking" and "indie" you are, and that type of polarising behavior does absolutely nothing to help feminism. It creates divides between women who judge each other based on their appearance.

That said... I mean, I get what they're doing. I just think they're going about it the wrong way.

Educate the CEO's, the bosses, the managers who fire women who don't wear makeup, and who make it part of their workplace agreement that women have to wear heels and skirts. Those are the people who need to change, not the women.

Wild

Wore stuff to a 'wild things' party, not sure what that meant but felt kind of right in this. Exploring the world of fake lashes. This is only my second foray into said world and it was mostly a positive experience. Basically, they're a bit annoying but you get used to them.

Not a lot going on, many conversations, job hunting (and being denied from Woolworths, what an ego boost! FML.) and house hunting. David Bowie. Beans. Whisky. Tim and Eric. Making creepy little dudes:

Glare

Verrry rushed photos from the other day, with weird faces because it was too glarey to look at the camera properly. Showing off my new space girl lipgloss, which is three parts David Bowie and a little bit Courtney Stodden. Also one of my favourite 90's pretending to be 60's dresses. The best kind.

On this day I saw Batman. You know what? Batman SUCKED. It sucked SO HARD. It was a shitty action film with a shitty villain and a shitty, shitty twist. Seriously Nolan? Or should I say, Nolan's brother?? Whoever was responsible for that waste of two and a half hours was a complete idiot. Or was an aspiring Michael Bay. OR BOTH, OBVIOUSLY.

I mean, you know. The reason it was so bad was because the first two were so good. They were so good! Batman deserved a better end than that. Ugh, and judging from the ending it wasn't even the end, was it? IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE END.

Anyway.

How did he get back to Gotham from the hole-prison? In like half a day? From the other side of the world? WITH NO MONEY OR ID??? OR ANYTHING?!??!

ANYWAY.

Drunk Swatches

Ok I am soooo excited for this shit!!! I have been waiting for my post to arrive and it came today JUST as I was leaving for work so the whole shift I was like OMG LET ME GO HOME PLEASE LIPSTICKS!!!!

Yes so. Illamasqua, obviously, lipstick in Kontrol and Intense Lipgloss in Galactic. They are every bit as amazing as I was hoping for. Kontrol smells like vanilla and is the perfect matte goth lipstick. Galactic is like David Bowie in a lipgloss. Yay!!!

Concrete

Photos taken by Oscar Casley

Gotta say, I'm pretty happy with the way my hair turned out. I'd been thinking about dying it pink for a while, and then I had a dream that I dyed it, so... it was time. This is actually the outfit I wore yesterday to go and buy the dye from Victorian Gothic on Brunswick st, but I thought it suited and I'd photo it with the hair. Double denim ftw. The dye I used was Manic Panic's Cotton Candy Pink.

So I've recently gone back on any reservations I had about high waisted short shorts. Tbh, it was because of this lady, who I've recently fallen in obsession with:

Photos from Tumblr

Naomi Shimada. She is amazing!! She's inspired me to wear tiny shorts, because now that I can see them on someone who is more my size (no offense meant at all to all the tiny girls out there, but there are so many photos of you and almost none of anyone bigger) they are suddenly so much more appealing. She also inspired me, in a moment of excitedness, to apply for plus size modelling. I've since been rejected, but oh well! It was fun taking the photos. Naomi also does a weird cooking show on youtube called Bitchin' in the Kitchen, which is pretty funny. Check it oot.

This past weekend was the Orthodox Easter, so I have a couple of photos from that too. I was too busy eating my Nana's amazing food to take photos of it.

Quite happy with my makeup, again. That was a long post.

Psyched

About this giveaway, because Gwen makes like amazing stuff, and she's giving it away! For reals, I actually want to win this because I love the stuff she's made so much. She's got great taste and is awesome at DIY. Also, I love her blog. Which is why I'm plugging it now. I mean... I feel a bit dirty plugging a giveaway I want to win, but I would never do it unless I thought the blog was awesome in the first place. So yeah. Read her tutorials, get crafty, and hooray.

Also psyched about these pants that I bought, cuz they're Wranglers and were on mega sale for $40, and they're amazing.

They are literally the most comfortable pants in the history of humanity. They feel like they're caressing my bum with velvet when I walk. I feel like I'm ready to embrace flares again, post-high school. They remind me of the 70s. The high waist is niiiiccceeee.

I didn't put my face in the photo because of REASONS. Namely, I bought some new makeup and I think it looks disgusting. I'm cosplaying as Princess Bubblegum for Supanova, so I bought some pink lipstick and eyeshadow for the first time. Unfortunately, my olive toned skin makes any pink makeup look like a rash or something. Like seriously, I know people are always like omg olive skin so nice, but it actually kind of sucks when you are into really bright colours, because a lot of them only suit people with pale skin. I find it hard to choose makeup that doesn't look terrible, and isn't just neutral colours. It may also just be that I've never really worn that much makeup before and have no idea how to apply it! Oh well.

Princess Bubblegum pix coming soon. Probably more complaining about inane things too.

Nana's Birthday

Today was Nana's birthday and I ate a lot of ham. The end.

I wore these kind of LDR clothes and my fav urban decay eyeliner. It was in the Botanical Gardens. I got that dress at Kinki Gerlinki on sale for like $20 which is kewl. The shoes are from Zu and I made the headband one time I dressed up as Louise Brooks for a birthday party. I feel very full and lazy which is why I can't be bothered writing anything right now. It was a beautiful day, that perfect hot and sunny with a cool breeze. :))) Now I can watch Parks and Rec in bed.

Edit: Oh yeah, NBD, saw Wild Flag on Fri night. It was so fucking awesome. We were dancing so much in the last song (Romance) and then when we talked to Mary Timony afterwards she was like, "You guys were the ones dancing! You made me so happy!" .... And then we got a high five from Janet, who recognised my boyfriend because she could see him dancing so much from the stage. For reals, TOO MUCH.
